Genesis 25

Abraham's Death and His Descendants

And Abraham had taken another wife, and her name was Keturah.
And she bore him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah.
And Jokshan fathered Sheba and Dedan. The sons of Dedan were Asshurim, Letushim, and Leummim.
The sons of Midian: Ephah, Epher, Hanoch, Abida, and Eldaah. All these were the children of Keturah.
Abraham gave all that he had to Isaac,
but to the sons of the concubines whom Abraham had, he gave gifts while he was still living, and he sent them away from Isaac his son, eastward, to the land of the east.
Now these are the days of the years of Abraham’s life that he lived: 175 years.
Abraham breathed his last and died at a good old age, old and full of years, and was gathered to his people.
And Isaac and Ishmael, his sons, buried him in the cave of Machpelah, in the field of Ephron the son of Zohar the Hittite, that is before Mamre,
the field that Abraham purchased from the children of Heth. Abraham was buried there with Sarah his wife.
And it came to pass after the death of Abraham that God blessed Isaac his son. Isaac lived by Beer Lahai Roi.
Now these are the descendants of Ishmael, Abraham’s son whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah’s slave girl, bore to Abraham.
And these are the names of the sons of Ishmael, by their names, according to the order of their birth: the firstborn of Ishmael, Nebaioth, then Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam,
Mishma, Dumah, Massa,
Hadad, Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah.
These are the sons of Ishmael and these are their names, by their villages and by their encampments, twelve rulers according to their tribal groups.
These are the years of the life of Ishmael: 137 years. And he breathed his last and died, and was gathered to his people.
And he settled from Havilah to Shur, which is east of Egypt as you go toward Assyria. And he lived in hostility to the face of all his brothers.

The Birth of Esau and Jacob

Now these are the descendants of Isaac, son of Abraham. Abraham fathered Isaac,
and Isaac was 40 years old when he took Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel the Aramean of Paddan-aram, the sister of Laban the Aramean, to be his wife.
And Isaac prayed to Yahweh for his wife because she was barren, and Yahweh responded to him and Rebekah his wife conceived.
But the children struggled mightily together inside her. She said, “If it is so, why am I this way?” And she went to inquire of Yahweh.
And Yahweh said to her, “Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from your belly will be divided. One people will be stronger than the other people; and the elder will serve the younger.”
And when her days to be give birth were fulfilled, behold, there were twins in her womb.
The first came out reddish, and covered with hair all over like a hairy cloak. They named him “Esau.”
And after that, his brother came out, and his hand was holding on to Esau’s heel, so he was named “Jacob.” Isaac was 60 years old when she bore them.
The boys grew up. Esau was a skillful hunter, a man of the field. Jacob was a quiet man, living among the tents.
Now Isaac loved Esau because he had a taste for his wild game, but Rebekah loved Jacob.

Esau Sells His Birthright

Once when Jacob was boiling some boiled stew, Esau came in from the field, and he was exhausted and hungry.
And Esau said to Jacob, “Please! Let me gulp down some of that red stuff, that red stuff, because I am exhausted and hungry. So his name was called Edom.
But Jacob said, “First, sell me your birthright.”
And Esau said, “Look, I am about to die, so of what use is a birthright to me?”
Jacob said, “First, swear to me.” So he swore to him, and sold his birthright to Jacob.
Then Jacob gave Esau bread and boiled lentils. And he ate and drank and rose up and went off. So Esau showed contempt for his birthright.
